We are often asked when VR and AR will be

First of all, it is important to consider our position in the development of immersive computing and to ensure that we make the right comparison. One example is the development of mobile phones. IPhone was introduced ten years ago, and smartphones are everywhere. So some people think that immersive computing will follow the same curve at the same time scale. That's not true, but it's useful to look back at the history of mobile phones for reasons.

The first commercial mobile phone, DynaTAC 8000X, was released in 1984. That was 33 years ago, not ten years. Since we are now in the stage of immersive computing equipment available to the first generation of consumers, it is more appropriate to compare with 1980s handsets than any mobile phone that has been released over the last ten years. This is not to say that I believe that VR and AR will take 30 years to fully mature and achieve similar usage and impact. I am more optimistic than that. But compared to smartphones ten years ago, it was wrong.

First, obstacles.We must eliminate more barriers to the use of these equipment. Head mounted equipment must be easier to use, more comfortable, and more portable. The Daydream independent VR head device we just posted on Google I / O is a step in the right direction. It has all the content that VR needs. To experience virtual reality, simply wear them. However, we have almost no optimized user experience.

Next, there is the underlying technology.In order to make VR more portable, AR is more convincing and useful, and everything behind these experiences must be improved: display, optics, tracking, input, GPU, sensors, etc. as an example, in order to implement in VR

Another part of this is a broader, deeper experience. With the improvement of the underlying technology, new applications and experiences will become possible. To illustrate what I mean, take an application like Tilt Brush. It is impossible to exist before we have controllers that can perform position tracking in space. Painting with a handle doesn't make any sense. Hardware and software must be developed together. We will see more common evolution in the future. Accurate hand tracking will make a new set of interactions possible, and eye tracking will enable new types of social applications to rely on eye contact and realistic facial expressions.

Also, we need more content to experience, play and use. Experience and applications that need to be interesting to everyone. I am very optimistic, I believe the immersive computing will soon make our life better.
