NextRadio is a broadcast-enabled application that works with smartphones containing valid FM chips, including devices from HTC, Motorola, and LG, to let users listen to local radio stations. This uses less battery and data than applications that listen to the radio over the network and, of course, less control over what you listen to. In addition to the nostalgia factor, FM radio broadcasting can save lives, especially in times of emergency. The mobile Internet has been paralyzed and access to emergency information via FM chip to local radio stations can be a precious asset.
The Federal Communications Commission had previously asked Apple to startiPhoneHidden in the FM radio to help public safety. Apple responded that its newer iPhone 7 and 8 models do not actually have the necessary chips and claim the old phones already include other security features. FCC chairman Ajit Pai had previously said that 44% of US "best selling smartphones" have FM radio enabled, compared with 80% in Mexico.
