Windows Server 2019 goes online in the second half of the year: the first preview version goes online

Microsoft announced that Windows Server 2019 will be available in the second half of 2018. The first preview version has been released for download. It is the next major release update for Long Term Service Channel (LTSC) customers. Microsoft said that the new version highlights four major topics: hybrid, security, application platform and hyper-converged infrastructure.

Currently, Windows Server has two channels, of which the short-term support version (Semi-Annual Channel) follows the rhythm of Windows 10 and is updated every six months for 18 months. The long-term support version (Long-Term Servicing Channel/) Updated every 2-3 years for 10 years. The earliest version of the current LTSC branch is Windows Server 2016.

In the hybrid cloud, enterprise customers can use Project Honolulu to manage Windows Server deployments. Microsoft stated that users can easily integrate Azure services such as Azure Backup, Azure File Sync, and disaster recovery to use these Azure services without interrupting applications and infrastructure.

In terms of security, Microsoft focused on three points: "protection, detection and response." The debut of the Shielded feature in Windows Server 2016 has been further enhanced. This feature will support Linux virtual machines, and Microsoft announced that it will expand VMConnect to support Linux troubleshooting.

In terms of application platform, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) will log into Windows Server 2019. At present, WSL has already entered the half-channel version. At present, Microsoft is improving its support for Kubernetes.

Finally, Microsoft stated that System Center 2019 will be available before the end of this year and will support Windows Server 2019. Currently Microsoft released the first preview version of Build 17623, which already contains most of the above features, such as Windows Defender ATP and Shielded Linux VMs.
