Security researchers discovered loopholes in Meltdown and Specter in early January, and Microsoft was one of the first companies to issue patches. In the past few months, Microsoft has released multiple patches to ease the reported security vulnerabilities and protect users from the impact of these two vulnerabilities. In February of this year, Intel released microcode updates to CPU, such as Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake and Skylake platform, to their OEM partners. Microsoft has launched Windows 10 version 1709 and above firmware update.

Today Microsoft is using Windows 102018 update in April (version 1803) to launch Intel firmware updates to all supporting devices. It is noteworthy that Windows 10 KB4100347 is only shipped to the PC equipped with Intel processors, and contains more mitigation measures for the Spectre Variant 2 vulnerability. CVE 2017-5715 (Specter Variant 2) is one of the vulnerabilities found in Intel CPU and was disclosed earlier this year.

Intel said that, based on these efforts, Intel has now released product microcode updates to OEM customers and partners based on Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake platforms, as well as other platforms based on Skylake. Microsoft said that the update can be obtained through Windows Update. If users enable automatic updates in settings, it will be downloaded automatically. Users can also download it from the Microsoft Update directory.
