On May 27, according to some media reports, Apple's iOS 12 system will undergo a major upgrade in functionality, allowing some third-party developers to fully access the NFC chip's various rights in iPhone smartphones.
The media also reported that Apple hopes that the iPhone can be used in more contactless and interactive areas than just Apple Pay, for example, it can be used as a hotel room key, or in a more streamlined form of transportation. Acts as a virtual conversion card.
In fact, in order to expand these features of the NFC chip in iOS, Apple began its exploration in the iOS 11 system. For example, Apple added the CoreNFC framework to the iOS 11 system. This framework enables related applications to use the NFC chip as an arbitrary scanner for electronic tags. However, there were still huge limitations in these functions at the time, and there were still major deficiencies in terms of convenience.
According to media sources, after the upgrade, the new iOS 12 will enable iPhone owners to simply open the hotel room by placing the phone on the door lock. This feature has many similarities with the current Apple payment function. With the upgrade of iOS 12, the iPhone will no longer need to configure special applications to perform some functions automatically, as long as the user moves the phone closer to those terminals that do not need contact.
According to the new plan, Apple will also allow third parties to coordinate with the iPhone's built-in security system to help store sensitive information. If the NFC chip in the iPhone is used more widely, similar functions will be realized.
In addition to serving as a hotel room key, Apple also hopes to use iPhone NFC technology to replace some conversion cards or transit cards.
According to sources, Apple will announce related upgrade functions at the World Developers Conference (WWDC) next month. By then, Apple will announce the iOS 12 system and other important software platforms. Whether Apple will announce the addition of API functionality to the SDK to help users fully use these features or whether to announce the new NFC feature to be open to specific partners will not be known at this time.
