The ZTE incident is a warning bell for Tencent chairman Ma Huateng.
According to media reports, Ma Huateng has promised to push forward the development of the Chinese semiconductor industry, on the grounds that the US government banned ZTE from buying parts products from the US market for up to 7 years.
The United States claims that ZTE, the second largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in China, violated the US sanctions against Iran and North Korea. It is estimated that US companies account for 25% to 30% of ZTE's components.
The US government said on Friday that an agreed agreement would reinvest ZTE after a $1 billion 300 million fines and management reforms were paid by the Zte Corp. However, the plan was opposed by the US Congress, which shows that ZTE is still far from the predicament. In addition, ZTE has not confirmed the deal.
Ma Huateng said at the summit that the recent ZTE events made you aware that mobile payments are more advanced, without mobile terminals, without chips and operating systems, and that your strength is not enough. Today, the ZTE event is being properly solved, but we still can't take it lightly. At this time, we should pay more attention to the research of the basic discipline, because the basic discipline of the whole China is still very weak.
Ma Huateng made two suggestions for developing basic science:
First, governments, industry, academia and research should work together.
Two, internal enterprises and related foundations attract scientists from basic disciplines to return home and fund them to do basic research in domestic universities.
Speaking of the layout of Tencent in the chip industry chain, Ma Huateng admitted that letting Tencent involved in chip research and development may not be good at it. But Tencent can play two roles in promoting the domestic chip industry.
One is, the Tencent has a large number of application services, large-scale users, a lot of data centers, including the cloud, can be forced to design the chip design industry for Tencent services and needs.
The two is to create a spare tire. To explore the application of Tencent, small programs on domestic chips can directly support more services, one development, on the whole domestic chip can run, including the domestic operating system can also run. That is, using OTT to solve many problems, which may be the industry's expectations for Tencent. But this is not a difficult matter, and it may always be a spare tire.
In summary, the Tencent is currently studying how to boost the development of China's chip industry, which may include using its huge data needs, urging domestic chip suppliers to come up with better solutions, or using WeChat platforms to support the application development based on Chinese chips.
Media reports say China has been seeking to accelerate the development of its semiconductor market in order to reduce its import dependence. In addition, China also invites overseas investors to invest in China's largest state-owned Chip Fund.
