In 2016 John McAfee was running for the US Liberal Party presidential candidate. However, he eventually lost to Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico, and was not named. McAfee once said in the tweet: "If the Liberal Party requests again, I will join them in the election. Otherwise, I will create my own party."

McAfee does not seem to have expectations of his presidential campaign. He said in a tweet: "Don't think I have the opportunity to win. I don't think so. But to really change the United States is not the president, but to elect a U.S. president. process."

McAfee's fascination with cryptocurrencies may soon bring another unusual twist. In late May, he announced that he would issue a cryptocurrency note called "McAfee Redemption Unit." He described it as "connected with the blockchain, convertible, convertible or collectible."

In April of this year, he also revealed that he wanted to help promote cryptocurrency projects and initial coin-operated products (ICOs) at a fee of $105,000 per tweet.
