The plan covers more than 6,000 Amazon employees working in the company's operations center. Amazon will have 1,500 employees in its new operations center in Tucson.
Amazon spokesman Lauren Lynchren called it "a plan we want them to never accept."
“We want people who work at Amazon to want to stay here,” Lynch said in an e-mail. “Our goal is to encourage people to spend a little time thinking about what they really want. In the long term, we think Staying where you don't want to stay is not healthy for our employees or companies."
Lynch said that only a "small part" of Amazon's employees will accept the resignation plan, but Amazon has not released a specific figure. Lynch said that this plan applies to all full-time employees.
Bezos said in a share letter that the plan follows the practice of Zappos, the largest online shoe city in the United States, which was acquired by Amazon in 2009.
