Google Opens Its Humanized Duplex AI Test Plan

Google is advancing Duplex, an amazing vocal test software that uses a completely new automation system that can use natural sounds instead of robots to make calls. The search giant said on Wednesday that it has begun public testing of the software, which was launched in May to call companies and make appointments. Duplex AI immediately raised questions about ethics and privacy issues with realistic conversations using AI assistants.

Google said that its plan is to conduct public tests and referees through a small group of "trustworthy testers" and companies that choose to receive Duplex phones in the coming weeks. On Tuesday, Google invited the media to the Oren Hummus Store in Mountain View, Calif., a small Israeli restaurant 1.5 miles from its corporate campus where the first live demonstration of the project can be seen and tried on its own. Unlike the semi-robot voice assistant that we hear today, Duplex AI can imitate human speech patterns and use oral words such as "呃" and "ld"; um. It pauses and prolongs the pronunciation of the word, just like the pause in a real person's speech.

But this realism is also confusing to people. Critics worry that man-made intelligent robots can deceive humans to think that he or she is talking to another person. Previously Yossi Matias, Google’s vice president of engineering, disclosed that the company may disclose to the outside world that the Duplex AI demonstrates the real status and details of the demo being in conversation with the robot, but then Google said that it could not commit to this matter. However, after several days of outside criticism, the company made it clear that this information will be disclosed to the product.
