Tencent Technology News, July 5 According to foreign media reports, Intel will not provide baseband chips to Apple's iPhone smartphones in the future. Intel has just confirmed that the company has stopped developing some of the 5G communication baseband chips that were originally planned to be used on the Apple iPhone.

It is reported that Apple has sent a notice to Intel to decide not to use the modem from Intel on the future iPhone, and this news has been confirmed by Intel insiders. Intel's decision will affect Apple's iPhone smartphones launched in 2020, and next year's iPhone will not be affected.

Intel has been developing a chipset called "Sunny Peak" that integrates 5G modems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless transmission modules. Considering Intel's partnership with Apple, the latter has seen this integrated chipset as the "main driving force" for future iPhone success, but after Apple made this latest decision, the Intel development team has already Attention has shifted to other 5G related projects.

Although Apple has temporarily abandoned the use of the Sunny Peak chip, Intel executives believe that the integrated baseband chip will continue to be improved in the future and may still be used on the iPhone in 2022.

It is still unclear why Apple gave up the Intel modem, but according to internal documents, Apple's move is the result of a combination of factors. The introduction of the WiGig Wi-Fi standard has become part of Sunny Peak. This standard will bring new and unanticipated challenges to mobile devices, so there is a relatively large risk.

Although this report covers the Sunny Peak project, it does not necessarily prove that Intel will exit the baseband market. At present, Intel and Qualcomm also provide modems for Apple, but there are reports that Apple will split baseband orders by 70% and 30% in the future. Among them, 70% of the baseband chips on the iPhone in 2018 will be provided by Intel to gradually In 2019, the transition began to completely abandon the use of Qualcomm baseband chips.

Recently, Apple and Qualcomm are in the process of patent fees. Therefore, in the future, in addition to Intel and Qualcomm, the iPhone will only have MediaTek in the selection of 5G baseband chips. Recently, MediaTek has just released a new 5G modem, and will also provide Wi-Fi chips for Apple HomePod smart speakers. It seems that MediaTek is ready to provide Apple with 5G baseband chips.
