Microsoft and National Geographic jointly set up a subsidy fund of US $1 million to support AI research on environmental issues.

The plan can be accepted before October 8th (application website:Https://www.nationalgeographic.org/grants/grant-opportunities/ai-earth-innovation/) 5-15 projects will be supported in 5 core areas (agriculture, biodiversity, conservation, climate change and water resources). Each project is funded under $200 thousand, and the final results are published in December. In addition, all AI models built through funding schemes must be shared by open source so that other researchers can continue to study them.

In addition to funding, researchers will also get Microsoft's AI platform.DevelopmentTool support, joined the National Geographic Explorer community, and worked with the National Geographic Laboratory and the National Geographic incubation accelerator project.

Lucas Joppa, chief environmental scientist at Microsoft, said: "we will continue to explore the limits of technology and the contribution that it can bring to mankind and the world. I believe that through AI technology, we can change the way of society monitoring, modeling and managing the earth's natural system.

The AI earth innovation funding scheme is an extension of Microsoft's "AI earth program" announced in June 2017. Microsoft claims that in the past two years, the "AI earth program" has received over 35 funding for its Azure platform and AI technology worldwide.
