T-Mobile, the third-largest US mobile operator, agreed in April to merge with Sprint to become US telecoms giants Verizon and AT

Winning the T-Mobile US contract is crucial for NOKIA in Finland. Over the years, the demand for NOKIA's existing 4G network devices has been slowing down, and NOKIA's performance has been hit hard. Investors are now raising doubts about whether Nokia's 5G network equipment contract could start boosting profitability later this year.

5G networks can provide faster network transmission for mobile users and provide more reliable security for new industrial automation, medical monitoring, unmanned vehicles, and other commercial uses. But for the world's cash strapped telecom operators, they dare not commit themselves to upgrading their existing networks. Many operators believe that 5G technology is only a wireless transmission with increased capacity without adding new functions.

T-Mobile's agreement with NOKIA requires the latter to provide a series of 5G hardware, software and services to enable T-Mobile to use licensed radio waves to provide services. The two companies said in a statement that NOKIA would provide the T-Mobile with its air radio access platform, as well as the hardware, software and acceleration services of the cloud connected.

At present, the global network equipment business is mainly made up of three giants -- China.HUAWEIFinland's NOKIA and Ericsson of Sweden dominate. But since the fourth-generation mobile devices peaked in 2015, the global network device business has been struggling to cope with sluggish growth.
