Korea Telecom has chosen Samsung Electronics, Nokia and Ericsson as its 5G equipment supplier, and China Telecom's Huawei is unsuccessful.

South Korea Telecom said in a statement on Thursday that the company made the decision after evaluating technology, cost, operational stability and compatibility with existing 4G LTE networks. It will begin transmitting 5G wireless signals on December 1st and launch commercial services for 5G mobile phones by March next year.

Samsung, Nokia and Ericsson have been selected as 5G equipment suppliers by two other major telecommunications companies in Korea, SK Telecom and LGU+. However, LGU+ also selected Huawei as its supplier.

At the moment, global technology and telecommunications companies are racing to commercialize their 5G networks, which are critical to the telecom renaissance brought about by the fourth industrial revolution. Korean companies are also working to launch commercial 5G services based on joint networking before other countries.

In the process of building a 5G network, whether to adopt LTE and 5G joint networking (Non-standalone) or 5G independent networking (Standalone) is an issue that operators must consider. The joint networking helps to reduce the construction cost by utilizing LTE resources, while the 5G independent networking facilitates the 5G technology advantage to improve service quality.
