On November 9, Tencent announced a big event: Tencent Foundation will invest 1 billion yuan in start-up funds to support the “Scientific Exploration Award”, which is expected to inspire generations of young people to invest in scientific exploration.
Each year, 50 young scientists and technicians will be selected in nine areas of basic science and cutting-edge core technologies. The winners are 45 years old and each winner will receive 600,000 yuan per year for 5 consecutive years.
At present, the “Scientific Exploration Award” is underway. Nominations and registrations will be officially launched in January 2019. The first list of award-winning scientists will be announced in July 2019.
It is understood that the "Scientific Exploration Award" is chaired by the chairman and CEO of Tencent, the founder of Tencent Foundation Ma Huateng, and the professor of Peking University, Rao Yi, together with Yang Zhenning, Mao Shude, He Huawu, Qi Hezhen, Li Peigen, Chen Eleven Zhang Yitang, Shi Yigong, Gao Wen, Xie Kechang, Cheng Taining, Xie Xiaoliang, Pan Jianwei and other scientists jointly initiated the establishment.
At the same time, Xu Rongdi, Wang Zhizhen, Xu Guanhua, Pan Yunhe, Xu Zhihong and other scientists with high reputation at home and abroad will serve as consultants to provide guidance for the future operation of the Science Discovery Award.
Most importantly, the awards for the Science Discovery Awards will be based on corporate investment, public service operations, no commercial returns, and long-term operations.
