January 11, according to foreign media reports, market research companies Gartner and IDC released the latest data showing that the personal computer (PC) market is still declining. Although both sides agreed that overall PC sales shrank in 2018, they disagreed on whether HP or Lenovo had the highest PC shipments. However, Dell is arguably third.

Gartner and IDC continue to be optimistic about the PC market. For example, in 2017, Gartner and IDC believe that the computer industry has reached the bottom and that a reversal is imminent. Despite positive growth in the second quarter of 2018 and flat growth in the third quarter, overall PC shipments continued to decline last year.

The rest of the market fell 12.9%.

Meanwhile, IDC estimates that global PC shipments fell by 3.7% in the fourth quarter of 2018, to about 68.1 million units. Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and Acer ranked the top five suppliers in the IDC results. IDC agrees with Gartner on the development trajectory of top companies. The rest of the market fell 11.2%.

It is noteworthy that some Lenovo figures include the units that formed the joint venture with Fujitsu in May 2018, which will also affect the year-round performance.

All year 2018

Gartner found that 2018 was the seventh consecutive year of decline in PC shipments, although the decline was smaller than in the past three years. Shipments of all three leading companies have increased, while the other three have declined.
