US government closure caused many TLS certificates to expire and made the site inaccessible

via:cnBeta.COM     time:2019/1/12 1:02:32     readed:442

This issue affects many of the certificates associated with the .gov domain, and the inability to renew these certificates means that visitors (which may block the browsers they use) cannot fully access these sites, or may be alerted by secure messages to an unsafe Potentially dangerouswebsiteUsers cannot access these portals or even view basic information.

A government website with an expired TLS certificate but not implementing HSTS displays an HTTPS error in the user's browser, but can bypass this error to access the site via HTTP. However, browsers warn visitors not to log in or perform any sensitive operations on these sites because traffic and authentication credentials are not encrypted and may be intercepted by hackers.

It is unclear when the certificate will be renewed, and unless the government department resumes opening, we may see more problems with government websites.
