In order to compensate for the impact of the memory chip price reduction cycle, Samsung has already begun to strengthen its agent business, to catch up with TSMC, which will have to compete with the latter in the production time of advanced technology. At the end of last year, Samsung announced that it would use the 4nm GAA process by 2020. Industry observers, such as Samuel Wang, vice president of Garner, have doubts about mass production of GAA technology by 2022, but he now says Samsung looks likely to put GAA chips into production earlier than expected.
Samsung does not seem to have a unified statement about when the 3nm GAA process will be mass produced. Eun Seung Jung, Samsung's head of wafer generation industry, said at the IEDM conference last December that Samsung has completed the performance verification of the 3nm process technology and is further improving the process, with the goal of mass production in 2020.
The 3nm GAA process is still a little far from being mass produced in 2020 or 2021. Samsung is mainly promoting the 7Nm EUV process this year. It is expected to be mass produced in the second half of this year. Although Samsung announced last year that the 7Nm EUV process can be mass produced, in fact, the mass production mentioned before is only a risk trial production, far from reaching the bottom of mass production, and the bottom production this year is possible.
In the 7Nm EUV process, TSMC also announced that it would be mass-produced this year. It seems that Samsung has no progress advantage. However, Samsung has its own developed optical mask inspection tool in the 7Nm EUV process, while other companies do not have similar commercial tools.
