According to NASA, the dark galaxies are located in the "cosmic backyard" 30 million light-years away. The Bedin 1 galaxy is classified as a dwarf galaxy.
Astronomers estimate that Bedin 1 is about 13 billion years old and say its interaction with other galaxies has been isolated. NASA compares it to "living fossils in the early universe".
"Very few of these faint objects can be seen in Hubble images, covering only a small area of the sky," ESA said.
The Hubble Space Telescope is a joint project between NASA and ESA. The researchers published their findings in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society Monthly: Newsletter.
