The appearance of the system is somewhat similar to the wireless charging pad of a mobile phone, but the charging scale is much larger. At present, electric vehicles are mainly charged by physical connection, and the goal of WiTricity is to charge the car with a wireless charging pad. The charging pad has a built-in magnetic resonance coil that converts power into a strong magnetic field, and a pair of resonator coils are mounted under the car to convert the magnetic field to the charged power.
WiTricity says the result is a power transmission efficiency of up to 93%. It also supports charging powers above 11 kW, although this is a bit less than the charging piles we have seen recently, but it is important that there is no physical insertion. In fact, as driverless cars begin to enter the consumer market, and most are electric vehicles, WiTricity is pushing wireless car charging, thus avoiding the need for human drivers to charge cars.
