The company estimates that the size of smart speakers in China's mainland market will increase by 166% in 2019, and by 59.9 million in 2019 from 22.5 million in 2018. The penetration rate of smart speakers in China's mainland market will also reach 13%. By contrast, the growth rate in the U.S. market was only 46%, from 60.2 million in 2018 to 87.8 million in 2019.
Currently, Amazon and Google are the two leading technology giants in the U.S. market, but neither of them is in China's rankings. Major players in the Chinese market include Alibaba's Skycat Elves,milletXiao Ai and Baidu DeuerOS and so on. Canalys predicts that Skycat Elves will account for 39% of smart speakers in 2019, followed by Xiao Ai (25%), DuerOS (24%) and other smart speaker brands.
Jason Low, senior analyst at Canalys, said: "China's smart speaker market is a melee between local brands, whose goal this year is to maintain high growth by selling to more families. Hardware differentiation is becoming more and more difficult, and consumers are increasingly expecting smart speakers and smart assistants. Vendors need to focus on marketing the next generation of'amazing factors'for their smart assistants and voice services to change consumer perceptions and promote wider adoption.
