These devices also experience large loads and unexpected drops during daily use. The existing hinge mechanisms in some devices do not handle this scene very well.MicrosoftThe patented hinge design provides users with a solution to address durability issues.

This patent describes a high strength hinge mechanism. A hinge mechanism is attached to the display portion and the base to enable the display portion to rotate relative to the base. The hinge mechanism includes a friction member and a cylindrical shaft fixed to the friction member and the chassis of the display portion. The friction element is configured to apply friction to the shaft radially as the shaft rotates. The rotation of the shaft enables the display portion to be rotated from the closed position to the fully open position. The hinge mechanism also includes a frame structure that supports the friction element and the shaft.

In the detailed description, Microsoft also revealed that the new mechanism increases the stiffness of the touch screen display, thereby reducing the risk of damage in the use and abuse scenarios. During the test, the hinge mechanism's shaft reduced stress reduction and failure rate during the drop test due to the improved support provided by the frame structure.
