Microsoft Windows Core OS has new news.

The news about Microsoft's next-generation operating system, Windows Core OS (WCOS), has not stopped, but the official has not responded positively. The outside world has been understanding the operating system through various channels.

In January of last year, Microsoft was developing WCOS news. According to the disclosed news, WCOS is a kind of physical operating system across PC, tablet, smart device and mobile. It adopts modular design and uses Composable Shell. C-Shell/CShell) modular interactive interface for cross-platform interface. Around CShell, WCOS has spawned many different versions (subsystems/modules) that were first known:

  • AndromedaOS, which supports dual screens for Surface devices for folding screens;
  • Polaris, which is based entirely on UWP and modern hardware customization for the PC side;
  • Centaurus for larger dual-screen mobile devices.

In addition, some developers have found other related version codes and their applicable scenarios:

  • Oasis for mixed reality devices such as HoloLens;
  • Aruba for giant screen devices such as Surface Hub;
  • Lite (Santorini), a lightweight Lite, similar to Windows 10 S, can only run UWP/PWA apps from the Microsoft Store.
  • ……

It is worth mentioning that Windows Lite OS, because this version has been exposed very detailed, we have previously reported: Windows Lite OS codename is "Santorini", based on Windows Core OS, itsThe interface is very similar to Chrome OS.

These newsletters have given the public a certain understanding of Windows Core OS, but Microsoft officials have never loosened their mouths and have not introduced WCOS positively.

In August of last year, it was clearly stated in the job description of the software engineering manager recruited by Microsoft: The SiGMa Device Platform (DPlat) team has the definition and delivery rights of Windows Core OS (WCOS), and the system will be applicable to all new devices. The main job of recruiting engineers is to integrate the software experience on new hardware, which is equivalent to confirming the existence of WCOS, while the Microsoft team is actively researching and developing.

In January of this year, another news pointed outWindows Core OS includes open source componentsThis makes its modular (sub-systematic) conjecture further confirmed.

Recently, some netizens found that a Microsoft engineer's Linkedin file has a record on developing WCOS: Development Action Center's Windows Core OS (WCOS) variation of Action Center.

Action Center is actually the operation center in Windows 10, it is a convenient portal for the common functions of the fast operating system, and also a system message notification center. One of the engineers' responsibilities should be to port this functionality of Windows 10 to the Windows Core OS.

The information disclosed is constantly enriching our imagination of WCOS. As the article begins with, WCOS should be an operating system that integrates many “versions” of Windows subsystems (modules), and there are some sub-modules. It is open source.

But it must be emphasized that all this is a gossip from the outside world. There is no clear announcement from the official, so the existence of Windows Core OS does not exist. Is it what these messages describe? It is not known for the time being. In addition, it is rumored that the operating system subsystem Polaris will be released this year, the specific situation, we will wait and see.
