Amazon today announced that it will sell its just walk out cashless store technology to other retailers. This is a big news for retailers around the world because they can provide a quick and convenient checkout experience for more shoppers. Just Walk Out technology could become amazon's $1 billion business.
Amazon's just walk out technology allows shoppers to enter the store, buy what they want and leave. Amazon already uses the technology in Amazon go stores in the United States. Since Amazon already has the customer's credit card details, it will charge the customer in Amazon's account. But for third-party retailers, Amazon's just walk out technology allows shoppers to enter a store, buy what they want, and then leave.
In stores with just walk out enabled, shoppers use credit cards to enter the store. They don't need to download applications or create Amazon accounts. Just walk out technology detects products that shoppers retrieve from or return to shelves and tracks them in virtual shopping carts. After shopping, the expense is deducted from the credit card. If shoppers need a receipt, they can visit the kiosk in the store and enter their email address. Receipts will be sent to them by email.
Amazon says it provides all the necessary technology to implement checkout-free shopping in retailers' stores and provides 24/7 round-the-clock support to retailers by phone and email. retailers will still hire shop assistants to greet and answer shoppers' questions, inventory on shelves, check ID used to buy certain items, and so on, and their roles have been transformed into marketers focused on more valuable activities.
