The WHO Foundation was formally established to better raise funds to meet the most pressing global health challenges, World Health Organization Director-General Tan Desai announced Thursday. The fund will receive donations from ordinary individuals and enterprises and will be used at the discretion of WHO. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to cut funding to WHO, but on Wednesday the organization denied it was linked.

Speaking at a press conference, WHO Director-General Tantesse said that the use of a large number of funds had been predetermined "as one of the greatest threats to the success of WHO" and explained that the organization was one of the few international institutions that had not yet received donations from ordinary individuals and that "it was necessary to broaden the donor base and improve the quantity and quality of funds ".
