Amazon cancels disposable plastic products in India

Amazon said on Monday that it had eliminated all disposable plastic from its packaging at its distribution center in India, fulfilling a promise it made last year to achieve that goal by June.The U.S. e-commerce group said it had replaced packaging materials such as bubble film with paper mats and was still using 100% plastic free biodegradable paper tape. Amazon is complying with the new guidelines at more than 50 distribution centers in India, the company said.

Flipkart made a similar commitment last year, the company said last month that its entire supply chain's reliance on disposable plastics had fallen by 50%. Last year, the wal-mart's indian e-commerce company said it intended to shift its supply chain completely to recycled plastic consumption by march 2021.

Amazon's announcement on Monday follows a directive from Indian Prime Minister Narendra modi last year, when he urged Indians to stop using disposable plastics by 2022. For several years, India has been trying to solve the major plastic waste problem. Asia's third-largest economy is trying to dispose of 9.4 million tons of plastic waste a year.
