Five years ago, Volkswagen exposed its emission door and paid $35 billion in settlement fees and fines in the United States. Volkswagen urgently needs to use the electric vehicle product line to restore its brand image.
The public is also full of confidence in the new energy market in the United States. They plan to sell 150000 pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles this year, and the sales of pure electric vehicles will exceed 1 million by 2025.
Starting from 270000 yuan, no benchmarking with model y
The predecessor of ID 4 is Volkswagen's ID crozz concept car, and it is also the second model of VW's pure electric product line. In the future, it will be sold in the three major markets of China, the United States and Europe. As for the first ID 3 with MEB platform, it is only available in European market.
As a global model, it is obvious that ID 4 is also the heaviest model of Volkswagen in recent years.

From the pricing point of view, ID 4 is a model for ordinary consumers. Although the price tag of $40000 is higher than the average price of a new car in the United States of America, if the federal government subsidizes $7500, the price will come down immediately.
After mass production in the Tennessee plant in 2022, its selling price in the United States will be further reduced to $35000 (US $27500 after subsidies).
With ID 4, VW can compete directly with Tesla, whose model Y model sells for more than $52000.
However, Volkswagen has no intention of fighting with model y. their main goal is to seize the market share of hot selling fuel products such as CR-V and RAV4.
At present, there are many electric products on the market. The price of model 3, Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet bolt and Volkswagen's e-Golf are not high, but they are not SUVs, and this is what users need most.
Volkswagen believes that ID 4 has the opportunity to become the most important vehicle to accelerate the popularity of electric vehicles in the United States. Today, electric vehicles account for only 3% of total sales in the United States.
Of course, Volkswagen is not the only manufacturer aiming at the affordable electric SUV market. Ford, GM, Nissan and other manufacturers have plans to launch small pure electric SUVs in the next few years.
However, Volkswagen thinks it is the quickest to move. The online booking of ID 4 has officially opened today, and the first delivery of vehicles in the U.S. market is scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
L2 automatic driving, with Tesla electric Zhenggang
The ID 4 sold in the U.S. market will carry an 82 kwh battery pack, and the vehicle will adopt a single motor rear drive mode. It is reported that ID 4, which initially landed in the U.S. market, will use LG Chemical's battery pack. However, when it comes to mass production in Tennessee, it will switch to sk innovation batteries (recently opened a $2 billion battery plant near Volkswagen's Tennessee plant).
In terms of performance, ID 4 is relatively mild, with a maximum motor output of 201 horsepower and an imported version with a range of 250 miles (EPA standard). The 302 HP 4WD version will be available later in 2021.
In addition to the attractive price, ID 4 comes with three years of free charging (at its electric America charging station).
ID 4 supports DC and AC fast charging modes. Its 11kw charger can make up 33 miles per hour, while the 125KW charging pile of DC fast charging station can charge from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes.
In terms of vehicle shape, ID 4 is not outstanding, but it is absolutely cool, which also conforms to its positioning of affordable models.
The front face of ID 4 looks more like a smiling face than the ferocious feeling of most current models. "Now the trend is to make cars like angry birds. We want to go back to the era of beetles and give users a beautiful smile. The public wants to bring pleasure to users, not anger. " Keogh said.
The return to the beetle era is actually Volkswagen's marketing strategy. Volkswagen wants to please two consumer groups with this shape: one is the baby boomers who grew up with VW's t-cars, but millennials who like retro style.
Due to the elimination of the traditional fuel engine, ID 4 has the same space as the Volkswagen Tiguan in the case of reduced body size.

Since it's an electric car, can't the central control screen be less?
