According to foreign media reports, those who want to stream Netflix content through the Mac OS Big Sur operating system in 4K HDR will need a Mac equipped with apple T2 security chip.Netflix recently updated a help center page that contains new guidelines for viewing 4K HDR content in Safari on MacOS Big Sur, as well as pointing out operating system and hardware requirements.
Netflix can't explain why the MAC needs a T2 chip to play 4K HDR content. The chip does integrate many key controllers, such as the system's image signal processor and audio controller, which have been proved to have moderate improvement in video coding. Netflix may just add T2 requirements to make sure users are using newer Macs with current graphics components.
Apple pointed out in the supporting documentation that HDR video playback is limited to 2018 or laterMacBookPro, MacBook Air 2018 or later, 2020iMac，iMac Pro, 2018 mac mini and Mac Pro, while 4K is limited to IMAC and IMAC Pro models only. There was no mention of T2 chip requirements.
Apple is expected to launch MacOS Big Sur in the next few weeks.
