After Amazon announced that it was about to activate sidewalk on its echo device, the technology has caused quite a heated discussion in the technical community. As a low-power, 900 MHz remote mesh network, the company hopes sidewalk will reach cities around the world in the near future. In this way, it can get rid of the subscription mode which depends on SIM card and operator network before, so as to realize the wide area network with low cost and low power consumption.
In practice, sidewalk can be used as a car's panoramic camera to monitor cars parked outside of home Wi Fi coverage.
Another example is the tracking of pet smart standard tags. In addition to not having to pay a subscription fee to the operator, this low-power technology can also work in the whole city mesh network, while avoiding the trouble of daily charging.
Of course, limited by the coverage of base stations (with echo devices as the center point), hundreds of families may be required to join in order to achieve complete coverage in a city.
At the same time, some people have raised concerns about the nature of the sidewalk network, which means that some of the data generated by strangers will also flow through the user's own network.
To allay concerns, Amazon has promised that all data flowing through the network will be encrypted. Only authorized devices will be allowed to connect, and the maximum bandwidth will be 80 KB / s.
If the project can be carried out smoothly, Amazon is expected to create great value for end users and release low bandwidth mobile data traffic from the network controlled by operators.
