In the third quarter of 2020, AWS's storage as a service revenue ranged from US $1.74 billion to US $2.32 billion.

AWS surpasses traditional suppliers and takes the lead in global enterprise storage market

In 2018, it brand pulse noted that no research company has published the number of cloud service providers' revenue from storage, nor has it published the position of these revenue in the list of storage leading manufacturers.

This prompted it brand pulse to publish an article on LinkedIn, summarizing the data from various sources and drawing the conclusion that AWS is the third largest enterprise storage supplier in 2017 and is expected to jump to the top in 2020.

The following is the latest estimate of AWS ranking in the 2020 enterprise storage rankings. All in all, the research shows that the forecast is correct, and AWS has become the world's first enterprise storage provider by revenue.

Let's take a look at how it brand pulse calculates the results.

AWS is growing much faster than the sluggish traditional storage leader

The following is IDC's quarterly list of external OEM storage market. This kind of storage system is the storage brand you can find in every data center, which is gradually replaced by storage as a service (staas) every year. In addition to the short-term year-on-year growth in several quarters, the development trajectory of traditional storage leading manufacturers has been flat or even declining.

Cloud system infrastructure services (IAAs) revenue is growing

Then we searched for data about cloud service revenue. Fortunately, AWS, the market leading cloud service provider, releases its revenue every quarter.

It brand pulse estimates that 15% to 20% of the total infrastructure as a service (IAAs) revenue reported by AWS is storage as a service (staas) revenue.

Here is Amazon's AWS revenue figures for the third quarter of 2020. The results show that the revenue of AWS staas in the third quarter of 2020 ranges from US $1.74 billion to US $2.32 billion, accounting for 15% to 20% of the total revenue.

Microsoft is the second largest supplier of IAAs and staas

In October 2020, synergy research released the market share of global cloud providers in the third quarter of 2020, from which we can infer the market share of staas. Amazon and Microsoft account for half of the market, accounting for 33% and 18% respectively.

It is estimated that staas revenue accounts for 15% to 20% of IAAs revenue. Synergy estimates that Microsoft's revenue is equivalent to 54.5% of AWS's revenue, and the revenue of Microsoft's staas in the third quarter of 2020 is between us $940 million and US $1.26 billion.

AWS ranks first and azure third in market share

The estimated storage revenue of AWS and Microsoft in the third quarter is inserted into the IDC storage ranking shown above. The result shows that AWS is now ranked first in the world by enterprise storage revenue. Azure has risen to the third place with revenue growth of 59%. Microsoft is expected to replace Dell to the second place in the fourth quarter of 2020 as soon as possible.

Enterprise server, storage and network leadership will be dominated by cloud service providers.
