Microsoft announced yesterday that it is updating the way it requires customers to allow voice data to improve Microsoft products that use its voice recognition technology. As a result, Microsoft now offers new settings that give users more control over their voice data.
Here is an official summary of the changes:
Even if you do not choose to contribute your voice segments, you can still use our voice function products and services.
We are also changing the way voice data is managed, which will affect the voice data you see on the privacy settings interface. Voice clips will be stored without identification - they will not be associated with your Microsoft account or any other Microsoft ID that might associate them with you. The new voice data will no longer appear in your account privacy dashboard.
To support these changes, the new voice settings will be introduced product by product. To ensure that we uniformly apply these changes to all products, we will stop recording any voice data for product improvement from October 30, 2020. Unless you agree to contribute voice clips specifically for this purpose, we will not record voice data in order to provide samples for future product improvements and be heard.
These changes will not affect any voice data previously collected and retained by Microsoft, which comes from products or functions before October 30, 2020.
